GS1 Digital Link QR code

The QR code that works at the till and on the shopper's phone, as retailers move from barcodes to 2D codes for GS1 Sunrise 2027. One code on the pack opens a product page for shoppers and gives store systems the GTIN they need.

What is a GS1 Digital Link QR code?

A GS1 Digital Link QR code puts your product's GTIN, the number under its barcode, inside a web address. The same code on the pack rings up at the till and opens a product page on shoppers' phones: details, recipes, instructions and the EU Digital Product Passport. Retailers are moving to these 2D codes for GS1 Sunrise 2027.

What’s inside the code

01 is GS1's identifier for the GTIN, followed by the 14-digit GTIN. Optional parts, like /10/ for a batch or lot and /21/ for a serial number, can follow.

How to make a GS1 Digital Link QR code

  1. 1

    Enter your GTIN

The 8, 12, 13 or 14 digits under your barcode. We check the check digit.

  2. 2

    Add product details

Name, brand, photo, facts, and links like recipes, instructions and sustainability.

  3. 3

    Create and print

Sign in with Business. Update the page any time; the code on the pack never changes.

What happens when someone scans it

Shoppers get a product page with your details and links; point-of-sale scanners read the GTIN from the same code. GS1's Sunrise 2027 goal is for retail scanners to read 2D codes like this by the end of 2027.

Always dynamic

GS1 codes are dynamic by design: the GTIN in the address never changes, but the page behind it can. Update product details, add a recall notice or a new recipe, and the code on every pack keeps working.

  • Fill in the passport section if your products fall under the EU's ESPR rules.

GS1 Digital Link QR code not working?

The till doesn't read the code
Many point-of-sale scanners still read only linear barcodes. Keep the regular barcode on the pack next to the QR code while retailers move to 2D.
The check digit is rejected
The last digit of a GTIN is calculated from the others. Copy the number from your GS1 account rather than retyping it.
Shoppers see a bare page
The page shows only what you add. Fill in the product name, photo and links.
